MARKET

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has formally launched this year's Capital Market Week with a focus on educating Ghanaians on how they can create wealth through the market.

The Capital Market Week, which is slated from May 4-10 2013, is on the theme 'The Capital Market: A key to economic Growth and Development.'

The capital market is part of a financial system concerned with raising capital by dealing in stocks, bonds and other long-term investments.

Launching activities marking the week in Accra, Adu Anane Antwi, Director-General of SEC said 'the capital market week, which was formally instituted in 2007, has greatly helped to educate a large number of Ghanaians on how to create wealth using the capital market as a means of investment.'

He noted that one unique feature of this year's celebrations is the holding of the Capital Market Conference on May 9 and 10, which is aimed at bringing together all capital market operators, regulators (both local and foreign), as well as policy makers to deliberate on issues relating to the development of the capital market in Ghana.

Outlining activities marking the celebration, Mr. Antwi stated that there would be a health walk and radio outreach programmes throughout the week to educate the general public on investment and capital market issues.

He noted that there would also be a Child Finance Day, which would be dedicated to educating children in Upper Primary to Senior High Schools on the importance of investing early.

He added that 'although tagged as part of the activities of the Capital Market Week will be held on May 31, 2013 due to the absence of pupils/students from school as they would be on holidays during the scheduled week.'

According to the Director-General, SEC will hold a workshop with the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) on Wednesday, May 8 to educate members of the association to use the capital market to raise funds to expand their operations and create more jobs.

The event would be climaxed on May 10 with a dinner at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.
